MICHIGAN — Five Great Lakes states have combined for 392 tornadoes so far in 2026, with Illinois and, to an extent, Indiana carrying the weight of the year’s totals. While Illinois and Indiana have set state records for tornadoes with still four and a half months left in 2026, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio have also seen their fair share of tornado activity this year.

Illinois Reaches Unofficial Record of Two Hundred Four Tornadoes

Illinois leads all five states with an unofficial count of 204 tornadoes through August 15, a total marked as a record for the state. This staggering number places Illinois far ahead of every other state included in the regional tornado tally.

Indiana follows with 87 tornadoes, also representing a state record according to the latest count. Together, Illinois and Indiana account for the overwhelming majority of the 392 total tornadoes tallied across the five-state region this year.

Wisconsin and Ohio Also See Significant Tornado Activity

Wisconsin has recorded 46 tornadoes so far in 2026, while Ohio has seen 29, rounding out the states that have experienced notable tornado activity beyond the record-setting totals in Illinois and Indiana. Michigan has recorded 26 tornadoes through the same period.

These totals, while smaller than Illinois and Indiana’s numbers, still reflect an active year for tornado activity across the broader Great Lakes region, particularly given Wisconsin’s total of 46 twisters through mid-August.

Michigan’s Lower Peninsula Has Not Seen a Tornado Since June Sixteenth

Despite Michigan’s overall total of 26 tornadoes, the Lower Peninsula specifically has not seen a tornado since June 16, 2026. This means Michigan’s tornado activity has been more concentrated in specific periods and locations rather than spread evenly throughout the year.

Similar to the last few years, most of the region’s tornadoes have happened within a couple of concentrated events, instead of being spread out over more than a dozen separate days, reflecting a pattern of intense but infrequent outbreak-style tornado days.

Four and a Half Months Remain in the 2026 Tornado Season

With the current totals reflecting counts as of 11 a.m. EDT on August 15, 2026, there remain four and a half months left in the year during which Illinois and Indiana’s already record-setting totals could continue climbing even higher.

Residents across Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio should remain aware that despite the concentrated nature of past tornado events, the overall 2026 tornado season has already proven historic for at least two states in the region.
