HAWAII — Hurricane Lala is intensifying this evening as it makes its closest approach to the Big Island of Hawaii. Maximum sustained winds are up to 80 mph with gusts up to 100 mph, and the eye wall is now brushing southern parts of the Big Island as the storm continues strengthening near the coastline.
Satellite Imagery Shows Well-Defined Eye Near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Satellite imagery captured the storm’s structure with a clearly visible eye positioned just south of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with intense red and orange convection wrapping tightly around the center. This well-organized appearance reflects the ongoing intensification trend reported this evening.
The eye’s current position places it in close proximity to the southern coastline of the Big Island, consistent with reports that the eye wall itself is now brushing the island’s southern parts as Lala continues its closest approach.
Maximum Sustained Winds Reach Eighty MPH With Higher Gusts
Maximum sustained winds associated with Hurricane Lala are currently up to 80 mph, placing the storm firmly within hurricane strength. Gusts within the storm are reaching even higher, up to 100 mph, adding to the potential for significant wind damage across areas experiencing the eye wall’s passage.
This combination of sustained hurricane-force winds and even stronger gusts represents a serious threat for the southern Big Island communities currently within range of the storm’s most intense wind field.
Kailua-Kona and Hilo Positioned Near Storm’s Northern Extent
The satellite image shows both Kailua-Kona and Hilo positioned near the northern edge of the storm’s cloud shield, with the most intense convection and the eye itself concentrated farther south near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
This positioning suggests communities closer to the southern tip of the Big Island are likely experiencing the most direct and intense impacts from Lala’s eye wall, while areas farther north may see somewhat less severe conditions, though still significant given the storm’s overall size and strength.
Storm Continues Intensifying During Closest Approach to Big Island
The intensification trend noted this evening coincides directly with Lala’s closest approach to the Big Island, meaning residents in the storm’s path are facing the combination of a strengthening system arriving at the same time as its nearest pass to land.
Residents across the Big Island, particularly in southern coastal communities near the current eye wall position, should continue following official guidance and remain in safe shelter as Hurricane Lala’s most intense conditions move through the area.
