Multiple New Lightning-Sparked Wildfires Break Out East of the Cascades With Sinlahekin Fire Now Exceeding One Hundred Fifty Thousand Acres

WASHINGTON — Several new fires have started east of the Cascades, many of them likely due to lightning, adding to an already active wildfire landscape across north-central Washington State. On several of the new starts, forward progress has been stopped or the fires have reached 100 percent containment, while firefighters continue assessing a few others to determine how they will progress.

Sinlahekin Fire Remains Largest Active Blaze at Over 150,000 Acres

The Sinlahekin Fire continues to stand as the dominant blaze in the region, currently mapped at 153,646.3 acres. The fire’s massive footprint stretches across a wide area near Highway 97, making it by far the largest fire currently tracked on the regional map.

Nearby, the Ptarmigan Fire has burned 24,057 acres, while farther east, the Kaiser Canyon Fire has consumed 138,212 acres, meaning three separate fires in the region have each burned well into six-figure acreage territory.

Cluster of New Small Fires Emerges Near Goat Wall and Omak Lake

A cluster of newly reported fires includes the Goat Wall Fire along with a series of vegetation fires strung along a corridor south of it. Farther east, the West Omak Lake Fire has burned a much smaller 0.25 acres, while the nearby Indian Dan Fire has burned just 2 acres.

An additional Vegetation Fire near Wenatchee, south along Highway 97, has burned 40 acres. The small size of many of these new starts reflects either quick containment efforts or fires still in their earliest stages of development.

Firefighters Continue Assessing and Attacking Newest Starts

On several of the day’s new fires, firefighters have successfully stopped forward progress or achieved full containment. On a few others, crews are still in the process of assessing and attacking the fires as they determine the best strategy for each individual start.

This mixed status across the various new fires reflects the rapid pace at which today’s lightning activity sparked new starts, requiring fire resources to be spread across multiple simultaneous incidents throughout the region.

More New Fires Expected in Mountains Over Coming Days

Given the abundant lightning that occurred today in some areas, additional new fires are expected to be discovered in the mountains over the coming days as crews and aerial resources continue surveying the terrain for smoke and hot spots.

Residents throughout north-central Washington east of the Cascades should remain alert for new fire reports and continue monitoring official updates as firefighters work to assess and respond to today’s lightning-sparked activity.
