Damaging Microburst Downs Trees and Closes Multiple Roads Between Mineral Springs and Monroe in Union County North Carolina Thursday Evening

NORTH CAROLINA — Union County appears to have experienced a damaging microburst between Mineral Springs and Monroe, with the Union County Sheriff’s Office posting photos documenting extensive tree damage across the area. Multiple roads have been closed as a result of downed trees and debris blocking key routes throughout the affected area.

Radar Velocity Data Shows Signature Consistent With Microburst

Radar velocity imagery captured at 6:19 p.m. Thursday shows a strong signature near Mineral Springs consistent with a damaging microburst, with the reflectivity image showing an intense core of activity in the same location. This radar signature supports the ground-level damage reports coming from the area.

The velocity couplet, highlighted in the circled area on the radar image, reflects the powerful downdraft winds characteristic of a microburst event, distinct from the rotational signature typically associated with tornado-producing storms.

Extensive Tree Damage Documented Across Affected Roadways

Photos posted by the Union County Sheriff’s Office show large trees completely blocking roadways, with substantial canopy damage visible across multiple locations. One image shows a fully mature tree down across both lanes of a roadway, illustrating the force behind the microburst’s winds.

Additional photos show downed trees resting across power lines and near a mobile home, along with debris scattered across railroad tracks, indicating the damage extended across a fairly broad swath of the Mineral Springs and Monroe area.

Four Roads Confirmed Closed Following Damage

The Union County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed several road closures resulting from the storm damage, including Clarence Secrest Road at Newtown Road, Newtown Road at Rocky River Road, Highway 75 at Rocky River Road, and Fletcher Broome Road at Highway 75.

These closures span a notable area between Mineral Springs and Monroe, suggesting the microburst’s damage path affected multiple roadways across this stretch of Union County rather than being isolated to a single location.

Residents Urged to Avoid Closed Roadways During Cleanup

With multiple roads currently closed due to downed trees and debris, residents in the Mineral Springs and Monroe area are encouraged to seek alternate routes while cleanup crews work to clear the affected roadways following Thursday evening’s damaging microburst.

Residents throughout Union County should continue monitoring official updates from the Union County Sheriff’s Office as additional information about the extent of the damage and road closures becomes available.
