Ode To Our Mighty Oak Tree

We have been told that the mighty oak tree that met its demise recently, was planted way back in 1976 by a gentleman named Cecil Callis making our beloved tree and Seven Lakes landmark, at least 47 years old just from a seedling.

Our newspaper entered “into the fray“ to save the tree several months ago and our efforts on behalf of a multitude of concerned residents was spearheaded by our own Moore County Commissioner, Mr. Nick Picerno. 

After a sincere and protracted effort by Nick and the engineers at the county we lost the battle with Duke Energy.  The problem we faced was not as much about the money, (as is usually the case) but with our timing which was crucial for the power to move forward with their scheduling.

“Progress“ as in this event sometimes fosters destruction.   Several residents have had a great idea to plant a new tree honoring Mr. Callis.  When the smoke clears, our newspaper will lead the effort into purchasing a new tree in conjunction with a plaque that will bear his name.  The Voice of Seven Lakes of which I‘m proud to be its Publisher is now and will always be vigilant regarding and seeking to protect  the interests of all of our residents, North, South and West.

A 48-inch oak tree would be at least 48 years old, and possibly much older. The age of an oak tree can be determined by its diameter, which is the distance around the tree at breast height (4.5 feet above the ground). The age of a tree can also be estimated by its growth rings, which are visible when the tree is cut open.

To determine the age of an oak tree, look at the tree’s trunk. The trunk will have growth rings, which indicate the tree’s age. The rings will be wider apart in the early years of the tree’s life, and will be closer together as the tree gets older. You can count the number of rings to determine the tree’s age.

If grown in full sun, a 20-year-old oak tree can reach a height of 60 feet.

Oak trees with mature crowns can reach 120 feet in height and 120 feet in width.

The great oak tree is the mother of all forest species, and it is the source of all ecological and wildlife interactions. Oak trees and acorns have served as a staple food for thousands of years, as has their acorns.
