It is rare in our Seven Lakes Community to meet a person who is a native North Carolinian. The Spongs are a rare find in that extent, but even more rare in their shared life together.Lives devoted to education, service, and children.A great match for Kiwanis, an organization dedicated to helping children.
They both grew up in the greater Charlotte area, went to Boone for College and graduated from Appalachian State with master’s degrees. While both looking for opportunities, Buddy was offered a teaching opportunity at Sandhills Community College.
They were introduced to Seven Lakes, looked, fell in love with the area and became residents.Buddy began his career at Sandhills Community College and Ann began her career as a teacher with Moore County Schools. As new residents of Seven Lakes in 1975 they had many opportunities to help this young community develop and thrive.
They did their share on many levels of service to our community and their church. They raised their two children here, which deepened their involvement in all things, school, and community.
Their many and varied volunteer activities, which included sharing their voices in song as well as advocacy, included the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. After his retirement from Sandhills Community College, Buddy served as Executive Director of the Moore County Red Cross for six years.
A fun fact, Ann makes Peach Honey. She feels her product promotes Seven Lakes and our amazing local products (peaches and honey). Her Peach Honey has traveled all over the USA and even to other countries – all shared with the Seven Lakes Peach Honey label displayed.
They are both active Kiwanis members.Buddy is the Program Director. He is an outgoing fellow and utilizes his vast network of friends in Moore County and beyond to secure top-notch speakers. His outreach expands the knowledge of all Kiwanians through those presentations.Ann is involved in assisting in many of our local outreach programs with children including the birdhouse build, Terrific Kids, Backpack Pals, and Bingo. As a couple, they help each other on all things Kiwanis.
They also share a love of Baseball. They love checking out new and old stadiums throughout the US and spend some time checking out the teams in Spring Training in Florida.
Their son, Alex, lives in Orlando and works at Disney.Their daughter, Angie, is an attorney and lives in Chapel Hill.Their granddaughter, Vivian, is the apple of their eye.She even beats out their cats, Bella and Tazz, as favorite, but don’t tell them that!
In June, Buddy and Ann will represent Seven Lakes Kiwanis at the Annual International Kiwanis Convention in Minneapolis! We are proud to be represented by two fine ambassadors for Seven Lakes and Kiwanis.Maybe a Twins game will be in their future?
Come meet Buddy and Ann and enjoy one of the great programs they bring to our club each month. Check out the Kiwanis of Seven Lakes on the web at http://www.kiwanisclubofsevenlakes.org.
